9 Book Recommendations To Help With Your Professional Goals!

by Yvonne Ruke Akpoveta

Need a good read right now?

Have you ever found yourself in a situation needing advice and not sure what to do next? The quickest way to find a solution would be to ask someone with the wisdom and experience in that specific situation.
What if you don’t know someone though? The next best thing is to read a book.

A book is more easily available and accessible than someone’s time. A book is also a quicker than waiting for an appointment.

Reading the right book can feel like being personally mentored by the author with a step-by-step cheatsheet at hand to get you going ASAP. It is quick access to knowledge that may have taken the author years to learn and research all condensed in one book.

Here are nine books I read in 2019 that were great, and helped me build momentum in my career and for my clients as well.

DO OVER BY JON ACUFF

This is an insightful and helpful book if you are looking to reinvent or refresh your career, or you are transitioning through some type of change professionally.

Also a great read for entrepreneurs. It’s simple to read with many great nuggets and a framework you can follow.

If you are not looking to reinvent or refresh your career, I still recommend you read it. You’ll get something from it for now or the future.

MANAGING UP: HOW TO MOVE UP, WIN AT WORK, AND SUCCEED WITH ANY TYPE OF BOSS BY MARY ABBAJAY

Struggling to progress in your career or work with your boss?

I have had clients ask me how they can make a difference or be effective in their jobs when they have a boss at work that is challenging to work with, does not seem to listen, is not supportive or comes across incompetent.

Perhaps you have a boss that is narcissistic, micro manages your work or seems a little hands-off?

DISRUPT YOU!: MASTER PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION, SEIZE OPPORTUNITY, AND THRIVE IN THE ERA OF ENDLESS INNOVATION BY JAY SAMIT

How good is this book? Let’s just say I stopped several times while on the treadmill to take notes as I listened to the audio version.

“… The author reveals how specific strategies that help companies flourish can be applied at an individual level to help anyone achieve success… it offers clear and empowering advice for anyone looking to break through; for anyone with a big idea but with no idea how to apply it; and for anyone worried about being made irrelevant in an era of technological transformation”.

You should definitely check it out to get some understanding around disruption, and on developing your brand and platform for impact!

THE IMPACT EQUATION: ARE YOU MAKING THINGS HAPPEN OR JUST MAKING NOISE? BY CHRIS BROGAN AND JULIEN SMITH

This book explores building your professional or business brand and platform in the midst of all the noise out there.

It provides tips and strategies on cultivating your message, creating impact, and building trust. Also has some great tips on tools such as social media.

OUR ICEBERG IS MELTING: CHANGING AND SUCCEEDING UNDER ANY CONDITIONS BY JOHN KOTTER AND HOLGER RATHGEBER

This is an ‘oldie’ but still very relevant book worth checking out. It is easy to read, but powerful!

Everyone interested in developing themselves professionally, and standing out as a leader in their profession should read this book.

It demonstrates the ability of one person to be able to mobilize change within any setting without needing a ‘title’.

AI SUPERPOWERS: CHINA, SILICON VALLEY, AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER BY KAI-FU LEE

This was a pretty easy and great to read!
It simplifies basics concepts, facts and potential fiction surrounding Artificial Intelligence, and touches on how it affects countries including China, North America, UK and Africa.

We loved it so much that we gave away a few copies away at our The Change Leadership Conference in May.

GRIT: THE POWER OF PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE BY ANGELA DUCKWORTH

If you’ve ever struggled with achieving a goaI or wondered why some people succeed in life and some others not, this book may finally provide some of the answers.

It has been written based on extensive studies and research, definitely not fluff. I found it easy to read, you can also take a ‘Grit’ test.

It presents great examples that you should be able to relate to, and a few great ‘aha’ moments! A great book worth reading.

THE CHANGE YOU WANT! CHANGE YOUR MINDSET, AND CHANGE YOUR LIFE BY YVONNE RUKE AKPOVETA

If you looking for a great read on mindset, and invisible barriers that may be slowing you down, here is a great recommendation if I may say so myself.

AMAZON REVIEWS…

“I have read several personal development books and this one resonates with me. I love the authors writing style and can’t wait for her next book!”

“This book is like a gold nugget! It’s small and it offers great value. Most books take far too many pages to get their point across, but Yvonne doesn’t waste your time. Her personal experience, her upbeat mindset, and the tools she’s developed will inspire you to examine where you’re headed and reach the goals you’ve set for yourself.”
